My mom is a bookkeeper. She also owns the chain of mechanic shops whose books she keeps, which means month-end lands on her desk from every direction at once. For years the system was a wall of file holders, one per month, and a few days of sitting in the office matching supplier statements against the invoices filed behind them.
It worked, in the sense that the numbers came out right eventually. It was also brutal, and it cost her days she didn’t have. Accounting software assumed the invoices were already in it; everything else solved a different problem. So she asked me to build the thing that didn’t exist — one person with a real month-end, describing exactly where the time went. Documents arrive however the supplier sends them. They wait until the statement shows up. Then the two sides get matched line by line, and a human looks only at what doesn’t agree.
She’s been running her shops on it since testing finished — the first customer, and still the one whose opinion decides what gets built. Month-end takes twenty minutes instead of three days, the matching is more accurate than the highlighter ever was, and the file holders are gone.
